Non solo la sua spettacolare descrizione della natura è, come abbiamo visto, fonte di meraviglia, ma lo è il suo stesso linguaggio musicale. La composizione mira a sorprendere l’ascoltatore con melodie inconsuete, create attraverso una maggiore ritmica e aumentati contrasti armonici. La sua musica risulta pertanto più libera e fluida, capace di descrivere al meglio la storia che desidera narrare, le scene dei canti degli uccelli in primavera, dei temporali estivi, della fuga delle volpi in autunno, per finire con il battere dei denti e della pioggia in inverno. Esprimendo al meglio la concezione barocca, la natura viene teatralizzata in un’opera di cui lo spettatore si sente attivamente partecipe, coinvolto nel turbinio degli eventi che si susseguono a ritmo incalzante.

A circa quindici metri sotto il livello odierno del centro della capitale, si cela un tesoro inestimabile: gli Horti Sallustiani, un'oasi di pace e bellezza che un tempo rivaleggiava con le più sontuose regge dell'Impero Romano.

Fatto erigere nel I secolo a.C. da Gaio Sallustio Crispo, storico e senatore romano, questo complesso monumentale rappresentava un capolavoro di ingegneria e architettura. La residenza, immersa nel verde, si sviluppava su tre grandi terrazze, ognuna adornata con giardini lussureggianti, ninfei, terme, statue e opere d'arte. Nel 20 d.C., gli Horti Sallustiani entrarono a far parte del demanio imperiale, diventando il rifugio preferito di imperatori come Tiberio, Claudio e Adriano. La loro magnificenza era tale da competere con le regge più sfarzose dell'epoca, rendendoli un simbolo del potere e della ricchezza dell'Impero.

Oggi, dopo secoli di oblio e spoliazioni, gli Horti Sallustiani sono tornati alla luce grazie a campagne di scavi archeologici, offrendo ai visitatori un'oasi di pace nel cuore del caotico centro cittadino. Essi non sono solo un sito archeologico di grande fascino. Grazie a un sapiente intervento di recupero e riuso, l'edificio è stato trasformato in uno spazio moderno e funzionale, adatto ad ospitare eventi culturali, convegni e mostre. Witness the evocative power of "The Four Seasons by Vivaldi" in the wonderful Horti Sallustiani - Rome. The most famous of Vivaldi’s works, and revolutionary example of Italian Baroque music, performed by Opera e Lirica Academy strings quintet and harpsichord.

Music representing the moods of the four seasons has always been popular, and baroque composers such as Werner and Fischer among others produced cycles of concertos representing the fours seasons. But none were to do so in such precise pictorial detail as Antonio Vivaldi in his Four Season’s concert!

The whole Baroque epoch showed a deep interest in the amazing natural changes determined by the seasons. Bernini itself represented them in its fine sculptures. Baroque art has a dramatic conception of the relationship between man and nature and between man and the universe. Galileo’s discoveries brought about a shift in the position of man, who was no longer at the center of the cosmos. As a consequence, a new attitude of awe and wonder towards the power of nature emerged.

Vivaldi’s Four Seasons are a symbol of his era. Not only is the feeling of astonishment conveyed by his spectacular description of nature, but also by his musical language. The composition aims at astounding the listener with unusual melodies, created through increased rhythm and higher harmonic contrast. His music is thus freer, more fluid and able to better describe the story it wishes to narrate. The scenes range from the chirp of different birds in spring, to summer storms, from fleeing foxes in autumn, to teeth chattering and rain pouring down in winter. In accordance with the highest expression of baroque concepts, nature is dramatized, and the audience feels actively involved in the rapid succession of events taking place in the work of art.
